The Sydney 2000 Olympics have finished, but...
Watching the Sydney 2000 Olympics was an exciting experience - especially for the statistically minded!
This is not an Olympic site (either in size or in relation to sports), but it does contain some interesting facts and figures that might help to understand the shape of future Olympic Games and the world in which we live.

A few thoughts prompted from watching the Olympic Games.

Population growth... Having a large population obviously provides a good source of raw talent. The United States and China are good examples. However, the 2048 Olympic Games will be held in a world where China is no longer ranked number one in population. Also, both Nigeria and Indonesia will have populations larger than the current United States. Click here for some facts on Population Growth.

Still going strong at 40... Click here for some facts on Life Expectancy.

Infant mortality... There was a sad moment when the world (they reckon up to 3 billion people watched the Olympics), listened to an athlete describe the difficulties he had experienced en route to winning a Gold Medal. The major tragedy in his life was the loss of his 3 month old son and his dreams of the future shattered.
A truly heart-wrenching moment, especially for people who live in countries where the chances of not surviving beyond infancy are less than 5 in 1000.
Some countries are not so fortunate and infant mortality is a part of every day life - click here for some facts on Infant Mortality.
